Pontiac G8 News Week in Review - June 27

It’s been an exciting week for Pontiac G8 news. Unfortunately, one of our biggest stories this week was our most disappointing. Contrary to reports last week of the 2009 Pontiac G8 GT getting an optional 6 speed Tremec stick, G8Nation confirmed with Pontiac Communications Manager, Jim Hopson, that the 2009 G8 GT would only be offered with a 6 speed automatic. If you want a stick, you’ll have to wait for the 2009 G8 GXP.

There were a few changes in command reported as well. Dave Gibbons will be overseeing Pontiac G8 production in GM’s Asia Pacific region and Holden Executive Director of Manufacturing, Rod Keane, announced his retirement, just as Holden announced the HSV W427, the fastest street legal car in Australia.

Scott Burgess of the Detroit News published his second review of the Pontiac G8. This time he spent a week with the G8 V6 sedan in Florida.

Shortly after getting his driver’s license, Chicago Cubs right fielder, Kosuke Fukudome was spotted driving a 2008 Panther Black Metallic (80U) G8 GT at Wrigley Field. Kosuke took it nice and slow as he exited the parking lot, unlike our friends from GM High-Tech Performance who tuned a stock Pontiac G8 GT to go 0-60 in 5 seconds flat.

Finally, our good friends at GM supplied us with the official 2009 Pontiac G8 colors and color chips.

Keep sending us your Pontiac G8 news and questions.

Back on May 21, we reported on Scott Burgess’ review of the 2998 Pontiac G8 GT that he wrote for The Detroit News. After reading his review, there was nothing more we could do than simply highlight all of Scott’s amazing quotes.

Today, we are reporting on Scott’s review of the 2008 Pontiac G8 Sedan V6. After landing at the airport in Fort Lauderdale Florida, Scott found himself behind the wheel of the G8 V6 with the AC cranked. Reflecting on his positive experience behind the wheel of the G8 GT, Burgess had high hopes for the V6 and he wasn’t disappointed.

Scott sums up his experience by saying “That car is raw power in a sophisticated package. The V-6 version may be meeker (compared to the GT) under the hood, but its package remains clean, well appointed and comfortable”.

The V6 accelerated nicely when needed and the vented 11.73-inch front rotors coupled with the twin-piston alloy calipers give the base G8 nearly the stopping power of its bigger GT brother. Equally impressive to Burgess are the variable ratio rack-and-pinion steering and the perfectly tuned multilink suspension.

“Driving in South Florida is like permanently playing a life-sized game of Frogger. The G8 made the experience a little easier”.

On the inside, Burgess points out the interior of the V6 is nearly identical to the G8 GT utilizing the same dual cockpit with the same silly Atari gauges that won’t be around for 2009.

Burgess concluded his review by saying, “When I parked the G8 at the airport, I walked away thoroughly impressed with the baby G8. It may not have brute strength behind it, but it drives like a great sedan”

Pontiac G8 Review by Scott Burgess of The Detroit News

Watch out Woodward, here comes the Pontiac G8. It’s a bold statement that’s supported by equally powerful words coming from Scott Burgess of The Detroit News. Just when we thought we heard all of the quotable G8 quotes, Burgess drops an arsenal of quotes on us that the Pontiac marketing team would be proud of.

We’re not ones to plagiarize, but we can’t find an appropriate way to summarize what Burgess had to say about the G8. Don’t look for any continuity or editorial form G8Nation in this post. We’ve decided to turn this into a post of Burgess quotes.

“Brawny and downright mean-looking, the G8 offers rubber-burning fun whether sprinting from stop light to stop light in Woodward tradition or speeding through twisty country roads. Dollar for dollar, this is the best Pontiac on the road today.”

“The G8 is the best of Detroit, or at least Australia, where the G8 is built. General Motors Corp., using its new global rear-wheel drive platform that also will host the new Camaro, has bestowed its Outback subsidiary, Holden, as the rightful caretaker of rear-wheel fun.”

“The wham-bam launch comes with power, but the fun stays due to the fully-four wheel independent suspension. It keeps the G8’s 18-inch tires glued to the road.”

“The handling is distinctively European — a combination of clean, precise steering and a quiet ride — but tap the gas and that throaty V-8 sings a beautiful baritone in your ear.”

“The G8 is not just the best performer for Pontiac, it also has the best interior out of the current crop of cars.”

“The clear taillights and quad exhaust tips covered in chrome demonstrate the attention to detail. Under the microscope, the G8 looks even better.”

“The front end is raw and magnificent. Most people giving the G8 an appreciative stare quickly notice the twin scoops on the hood.”

“The engine may provide the G8 with heart, the suspension may give it passion, but it’s the price that makes this car a contender. Every consumer wants a bargain.”
