So you have a hankering for a RWD 4 door good ‘ol American muscle sedan. Any chance you’re in your mid 30s to mid 40’s? Do you make $75,000 - $100K a year? Are you married with 2.1 kids? Have you seen the G8 SpyHunter commercial and had flashbacks to the arcade days of the mid-80’s while imagining yourself setting smokescreens and dropping oil slicks to evade chase cars?
Well if so, then Pontiac has your number!
Thanks to the dismal failure of the GTO, Pontiac has focused sharply on everything that YOU (and I) want and without stating the obvious, it looks like they nailed it with the G8. Under the stewardship of Lutz, Pontiac has delivered the ultimate car for you (& me). The rear-wheel-drive superfast sports sedan will attract the demo that the GTO didn’t… successful young male buyers.
With size and styling cues similar to that of the BMW 5 series, the G8 give you all you need to bring your clients to lunch, and take the family out for a day…all while leaving an extra $20 - $30K in your pocket.
OK, so maybe (just maybe) the 5 series comparison is a stretch. In marketing lingo, Pontiac views the Beamer 5 and the Infiniti G35 as aspirational challengers. The direct competition for the G8 is the Dodge Charger and the Nissan Maxima.

A void was left in all of our hearts when Pontiac recently announced that there are no plans for the return of the GTO or the Firebird in the near future. Those tears quickly dried when I found out about the Holden Coupe 60.
Admittedly, my knowledge of Holden did not run too deep until I started following the G8. Sure, I was aware of their involvement in the recent GTO, but not much beyond that. After doing my research, I can confidently say that Holden simply “gets it”. Holden represents what Pontiac should be (and will be thanks to the G8), and always should have been.
To celebrate their 60th Anniversary, Holden has given a gift to all of us. Behold, the Holden Coupe 60. The 60 represents a clear indication of Holden’s future directions in design, engineering and emerging technology.
Bringing sports luxury to a new level, Coupe 60 is a pillarless design that explores and pushes the limits of GM/Holden’s current RWD capabilities.
If the Coupe 60 is any indication of the upcoming G8 GXP or the 2nd generation G8, then we all have even more things to be excited about than we already do. If the 60 gets the nod for production, this beast could easily fit into the Pontiac line up as it stands today. The design is also very similar to the Cadillac CTS coupe as well, so there may be some significant sharing here across a few GM brands
Some of the cooler features in the Coupe 60 include:
- Electrically dropping front and rear windows - sans “B” pillar
- Rear under-body air diffuser
- Flat under-body
- 21 in alloy wheels
- Side-exiting exhaust
- LED tail lamps
- Side view mirrors with integrated LED markers
- LCD dash
- Carbon fiber bucket seats
- Four point racing harnesses in all seats
- 6.0L V8 with active fuel management
- E85 Ethanol friendly
- 6-speed manual transmission
- Engine oil cooler
Make us proud Pontiac!

The Pontiac mantra of excitement was revitalized as the G8 was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show. The RWD sport sedan with the 6.0L V8 pushrod produces 362 HP and launches its passenger to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Sounds like the perfect dose of adrenaline for the Pontiac brand.
If you’re like me (and you are since you’re on this site), it probably feels like the Great 8 was unveiled a loooooong time ago…well….drum roll please….the G8s are now being produced! The production plan down under is running at full capacity and will produce 620 G8s and Holden Commodores daily. About 50% of these will exit OZ, being split between, split between Chevy (Middle East), Vauxhall (UK), Daewoo (Korea), and Pontiac. After you run the numbers, that comes out to approximately 50,000 G8s a year in the good ol’ U.S of A.
I think it’s time we all go down to our local Pontiac dealers and start making friends with the gents who hold the keys to our G8s.

The replacement for the “the plug should have been pulled years ago” Grand Prix has been spied. The G8 RWD sport sedan has the responsibility of bring excitement back to Pontiac. The G8 is based on the Australian division of GM’s, Holden Commodore. The Commodore and G8 will share platforms; however, the sheet metal will be unique. These are the first spy pics of the Pontiac G8, and while they did a great job of concealing the styling, at least we know that project G8 is underway.
