Denny Mooney, Chairman and Executive Director of Holden recently stated that the Commodore needs to have a few pounds shaved off. He insists that this decrease in weight will not sacrifice the overall size of the Commodore / G8 as the current size is appropriate all markets in which the Commodore and all derivatives are exported.
Since the Commodore took flight in 1978, its weight has increased by more than 1,000 lbs, with approximately 200 of them being gained in its most recent generation. During its 30 year life, it has also increased 7.5 inches in length, 7 inches in width, and 4 inches in height and the engine has been beefed up from the original 2.8 liter to the current base 3.6 liter.
I can’t imagine these changes hitting the G8 before it’s introduced here in the states. Maybe GM will work on decreasing weight when they intro the GXP. I just hope Mr. Lutz finds a way to get the LS3 mated to a 6 speed manual in the G8 GXP.
